When we are little, we are never taught to be embarrassed or ashamed of how we are born or who we are. You’re encouraged to find yourself and your features are celebrated; “Oh she has her moms eyes!” “He has his dads smile”. By the time kids start school, they are taught to be ashamed of the very things they have always been proud of. I was born with thin hair and my fathers smile. My father has his mothers smile. And now maybe my children will have mine. All I know, is that the last thing I’d want for my children, is to ever be ashamed of who they are. The smile I was bullied into hating as I got older, I now see on my sons face and it brightens every room he walks into. In a society where we are taught to change yourself, alter yourself to fit in, have surgeries to look better; take it from someone who has had the surgeries and spent the money, bullying never stops even as you become an adult. I am bullied as an adult for things I fixed years prior, and I’m learning to be okay with it. Bitter people will always be bitter people, but you don’t have to choose to be bitter because of them. If any young girls ARE insecure with their smiles, their hair, their bodies, I would genuinely and sincerely hope they are surrounded by people who teach them to love themselves as they are and be proud of who they are. I am imperfect and no amount of hair extensions, makeup, or surgeries will ever change that. AND THATS OKAY. I will raise my children to respect differences in others and spread love, not hate. I will take this opportunity to stand up for the little girl I was crying over how I looked, by raising my children to be the kind of kids who love and support others and would NEVER make them feel the way others have made me feel. Anyone struggling with confidence and flaws, you are beautiful and never let anyone tell you differently.
