☁️How to Free your Lover from Faërie Enchantment : the rescue scene from the Scottish ballad “Tam Lin”✨🌙 If your lover is a captive of the Faërie and their release seems unlikely; if you dare, using the cleverest and most informed of counter-enchantments, you may succeed in rescuing them, which is exactly what happens in the marvelous old Scottish ballad of “Tam Lin.” Many many years ago, a beautiful human knight named Tam Lin caught the eye of the Fairy Queen, who spirited him away to Faërie. Under her enchantment, he becomes a sort of wraith who haunts the woods, stealing valuable objects from women who pass through the forest, or sleeping with them instead, and disappearing after. Such is the case with a lady named Janet, who becomes pregnant after her encounter with Tam Lin. In spite of the many problematic circumstances surrounding the whole thing, it seems that a bond of love formed between them, and he reveals to her that if she dares, she may free him from his enchantment by following a very specific set of instructions. She’ll have to do this right under the eye of the Fairy Queen… at midnight… at a gloomy crossroads on Halloween night. We have no way of knowing how long Tam Lin has been a captive of the Faërie Queen: perhaps only a few years, perhaps a hundred years or more. But in the end, Janet succeeds in restoring him to his human life, where love, family and an earthly future await him. But Janet and Tam Lin have taken this course of action at their own peril: the ballad ends with the Faërie Queen cursing Janet and hissing that she wishes that she had plucked out Tam Lin’s eyes and heart before he had the chance to escape her thrall. No doubt the two lovers will be treading softly through the rest of their lives. I’ve set these traditional verses to my own original tune here✨There are many versions of this ballads text. I adapted the version I’m singing here from two traditional versions that were collected of this ballad in the 18th century. Checking out the wonderful website tam-lin.org which extensively compiles the many recorded versions✨ #legend #fairies #fae #faeries #harp #scottish #fantasy ✨Sources and Resources✨ ✨Tam-Lin Balladry online: tam-lin.org ✨The Online Scots Dictionary: scots-online.org ✨“The Scots Musical Museum, Volume 5,” compiled by James Johnson, 1792, available online through the digital collections of the National Library of Scotland.
