You may lose your appetite, feel nauseous, bloated, or constipated. Your body isn’t malfunctioning — it’s prioritizing survival. 3. Chest Tightness or Shortness of Breath Grief often triggers the sympathetic nervous system, creating tension in your chest and shallow breathing. Some even develop stress-induced heart conditions like “broken heart syndrome.” To your nervous system, emotional heartbreak registers as physical trauma. 4. Bone-Deep Fatigue Grief takes a toll on your entire system. It disrupts your sleep, drains your adrenal glands, and keeps your body in a constant state of alert. Even when you’re still, your body is working hard to process pain. This exhaustion isn’t weakness. It’s a biological response. It’s your body’s wisdom.
