Let me show you how to instruct AI to work better with Cursor using rules. I'm completely rewriting a frontend with AI using a modern JavaScript framework, and without rules, the AI would happily try to rewrite the entire codebase and break everything. You can set up rules in Cursor using the .cursor-rules file. There's a UI you can find by searching for "rules" in Cursor. Here are some key rules I use: Single task rule: Complete only one task per response. This prevents the AI from going crazy and making multiple changes at once. Logging requirements: I tell it to add detailed logging wherever possible and never remove existing logging (for some reason AI loves removing logs from old code). No running commands: I want to run commands myself, not let the AI do it automatically. The key setting is "always" which means these rules get sent with every chat message to keep the AI on track. Interesting tip: I actually had AI write these rules for me! Originally when I wrote them myself, the AI wasn't paying attention to them. Now it follows them much better. Even with rules, AI occasionally goes off the rails. When that happens, I just click "stop" and get it back on track. This is essential for productive vibe coding.
