President-elect Donald Trump has selected Kash Patel to head the FBI. Patel is a fierce loyalist who has spread baseless "deep state" conspiracy theories about federal bureaucrats trying to overthrow Trump. He also promoted the false claim that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump and promised to “come after” members of the media who pushed back against those claims. The nomination is the latest in Trump’s perceived testing of Senate Republicans. “Kash is a brilliant lawyer, investigator, and ‘America First’ fighter who has spent his career exposing corruption, defending Justice, and protecting the American People,” Trump said Saturday night. If confirmed by the Senate, Patel will replace Christopher Wray, who was appointed to the role by Trump in 2017. Although the position has a 10-year term limit, Wray and the agency have drawn Trump’s ire in the years since, exacerbated by investigations and indictments over Trump’s handling of classified documents after leaving office. Patel served in Trump's first administration as senior director for counterterrorism on the National Security Council, senior adviser for acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell and chief of staff to acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller. “Patel had virtually no experience that would qualify him to serve at the highest level of the world’s preeminent law enforcement agency,” William Barr, who was attorney general at the end of Trump’s first term, wrote in his memoir.
