Confidence is a constant practice of trial and error on how you want to view yourself. Can we jump into a theme real quick? Word choices for plus size/fat people who exuberate "confidence." Real talk: I cringe from some of y'all compliments, and I fight the air trying not to do that. Years ago, I struggled with my confidence. These days, I'm outchea thirst trapping my mind, body, and soul for me. The internal work most times lures in equally yoked people or those who are working on themselves to get there, which is dope to me. What's not okay are the sideways compliments. Let's lay out a handful: - I'm smaller than you and would NEVER be BRAVE enough to wear that - I could never be that bold at your size to wear a sports bra outside - If you can wear xx, I have no excuse - If you're confident like that right now, wait until you lose xx pounds Love to break it to you: This confidence was NEVER about you. My confidence was a work in progress at a size 6, lost itself years ago at a size 18, colonized wt loss culture talking points at a size 8 and kicked the wall down at 225 lbs while being fat shamed. As a 300 lb girl, I dare you to try to break me. I'm very neutral about my size, but how I dress is an enhancer to me. My brain and heart are the real show stoppers. Everyone is working on something. It has no gender, size, look, or one way to approach it. My body size is just an extra pillow. My mind is both a paradise and hell. My words are delicious and deliberate with a helluva bite. I define me before I allow the world to swallow me whole or in bite-sized pieces. When you see a plus-size person being their unicorn selves, be mindful of your projections and assumptions. When you speak to your mirrors with grace, empathy is effortless. You don't have to pretend to like everything, but confidence requires work and regular maintenance checks. I don't need to be told to ignore the "haters" because that conversation is cringe. Some of y'all think straight talk is a cry; I'm good. When you work on you, we heal as a collective.
