I was inspired by @lupitanyongo to finally share my fibroid story. Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in and around the uterus during your childbearing years. They occur at higher rates in African women for some reasons and bring some crazy symptoms along with it. A lot of us have kind of silently normalised it, but it’s pretty wild that we have to deal with it and carry on like normal. As mine got worse, my periods went from light and cute to so bloody I could barely even make it from bed to bathroom on day 1 through 3 of my period. I once finished a box of ULTRA tampons in 4 hours - like I used and filled each tampon. That doesn’t include the multiple layers of maxi pads, the anemia, the writhing from excruciating pain and the embarrassment. Scared as I was, I opted to get them removed and it truly was one of the best decisions I have made for myself. A lot of women live with this everyday and still show up in their daily lives. There is no cure for it and research for it is under-funded. @lupitanyongo and @foundationwomenshealth are raising money to fund a research grant to accelerate the development of non-invasive and minimally-invasive treatments for uterine fibroids.
