It's to do with travel. A strait line on that map is a straight line on earth. I means you don't have to be able to do calculus to use one.

Dylan they stretch the corners out to make a sphere a rectangle. My grandpa actually has a decently accurate rectangle map but not a perfect one

the common maps used are based on the Mercator projection which by far isn't perfect but it's a great map for navigation as it preserves shape
