In short the nitrogen cycle goes like this ammonia turns into nitRITE and nitrite turns into nitRATE, which then gets removed by water changes.

if love plants arent feasible a good alternative is silk plants. plastic plants can be harmful and tear up their find. silk plants help prevent that

Every plant is different some are low maintenance some high and require CO2. Personally I find Mosses and anubias to work well as low maintenance

When fish are ill i always start with aquarium salt bath and then go to medication. None of the mela/Pima/betta fix’s work that well.
