Yeah don't do this. You're dealing with boiling water and instead of 1 thing you're now holding 2. Slip and it burns you, or pasta falls in the sink.

I always run cold water alongside the strainer so the rubber seals in the drain don't melt over time with the boiling water. is that just me?

Facts you conveniently didn’t mention: Pot & strainer have to be very similar in size. And cooks with weak arms wont be able to lift/hold it like that
