As much as we like to talk about how “you can’t rely on motivation” to get your training done every day in prep for your goal race, “you need to be disciplined”… Motivation is still important. Here are 6 areas of focus for me that keep me engaged with my training and keep my motivation high. Perhaps you can have a think about these on your end too. 1️⃣ Mixing up my race distances I don’t go after the same race distance over & over again. I like the variety of running a 100-mile event, but then focusing on speed and training for a fast 5-10km time goal. 2️⃣ Changing up my running routes Now, this is a tough one for me 😄 I only have so many routes locally, but I live by the beach so I can’t complain. I do my best to mix up routes where I can. 3️⃣ Listening to podcasts Running is a great opportunity for me to zone out and listen to other people talk about topics of interest to me. Music just doesn’t do it for me in training anymore… it used to. 4️⃣ Training variety Generally speaking I include a wide variety of sessions within my training week (taking it easy after the miler at the moment). Varying intensities from easy runs to tempo, anaerobic work, strides, hill reps, hilly runs, long runs etc. 5️⃣ Setting big goals Am I pushing myself hard enough?? If it’s not big enough, I’m not going to be particularly excited to get my training done and work towards the target. It has to make me nervous for whether I’m going to achieve it or not. 6️⃣ Making training manageable for myself I’m not trying to run 6x per week and failing every week. I’m targeting 4x runs and I’m smashing it. That gives me motivation to keep on working at it 🔨 What’re some areas you think about when you’re lacking the motivation to get your training done? #runningtips #Running #runninggoals
