A child is outside on a walk when he turns to his dad and says, 'Daddy, what do you think the trees are saying?' The dad scoffs and says, 'Oh, trees can't talk.' They carry on walking a bit, and the child says, 'Daddy, what do you think the river wants?' The dad rolls his eyes and says, 'Ach, it's just water, son. They don't have any wants.' And so, the child stops asking questions, and he stops asking about nature. In this week's Mini #Philosophy interview, I spoke with the bestselling nature writer Robert #Macfarlane about his new #book , Is a River Alive? And for MacFarlane, this kind of instrumentalist viewpoint is both sad and deeply problematic. We are each taught how to see the world, and we have to be taught to see nature as what #Heidegger calls a 'standing reserve.' This is where nature is seen as a resource to be mined, and rivers are little more than #water servants to use. Of course, rivers can be both useful and inherently valuable, but the problem that Macfarlane points out is that we see them in a one-dimensional way. We do not see them as a life force, but only as a resource to be mined. #Children have no problem seeing nature as animated, and it makes perfect sense to a child that a #tree can talk, the #wind has desire, and that a #river has moods. But the modern age buries and destroys this way of thinking. Almost everybody has a #relationship with #nature, and we need to return to a language which talks about this relationship. So, as MacFarlane asked me, I will ask you: who are the #rivers that have flowed through your life? #literature #naturewriting
