Every industry works off the principle that you pay your revenue generators out of the revenue they generate. In a lot of industries this translates to sales commissions, but in entertainment and creative fields this typically means paying talent based om the revenue they draw (or the expected revenue). The arguments that WNBA players should only get money when the league becomes profitable is ridiculous and belies any actual business acumen. Profit is what's left over for business owners, not the talent. It's also not up to talent to manage expenses. That's for the business managers and back office staff. Talent is there to draw people to games and bring in the revenue. This is because the only way to become profitable is to gain revenue. Expenses can be cut only so far. As you earn revenue, expenses need to be managed to take advantage of the increased intake and maximize profits. You don't do that by reducing payments to revenue generators—you do it by further incentivizing them with a greater share of the revenue. The WNBA already pays players out of revenue, so this isn't even a theoretical take. It's what makes sense. Thr players are merely saying that their cut of the revenue should be in line with other leagues like the NBA. We can niggle over the numbers, but the ultimate goal here is to have more revenue.
