The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (陈家祠（又称陈氏书院） in Guangzhou—also known as Chen Clan Academy—was built between 1888 and 1894 during the late Qing Dynasty. It was funded jointly by 72 branches of the Chen family across Guangdong Province, who wanted a shared space for ancestral worship, accommodation, and exam preparation for their young scholars heading to the imperial civil-service exams​​. Because Qing law restricted the construction of large clan temples to blood-related lineages, the project was cleverly labeled “Chen Clan Academy” to gain official approval. The name allowed it to function as both a family temple and an academic lodge, offering lodging and education for Chen descendants visiting Guangzhou​​. After the fall of the Qing Dynasty, the building was repurposed several times—as a school, an industrial college, and eventually, in 1959, it became the Guangdong Folk Art Museum, preserving its architectural grandeur and showcasing traditional crafts. Today, it stands as the largest and best-preserved ancestral hall in South China, recognized as a national cultural heritage site and often called the “Pearl of Lingnan Architecture”​​.
