What you can do is machine a new shaft for the micrometer with the ball tip and then sent to micrometer at zero

You can buy ball bearings in a rubber collar specially designed to fit over the anvil.just makes it easier to hold

bearing has concave and convex when checked with micrometer should you not use loose ball bearing both inside and out
