It’s still very common where I live, on any given day I go visit my mothers grave and there are many families having picnics at loved ones graves.

I go to my mum and dads grave every Sunday and bring a flask of hot water and make cups of coffee while chatting away to my mum and dad

There's an old cemetery in Phoenix, AZ with signs that say, "No picnics, parties, or sports allowed", now I know why!😂

Congressional Cemetery is a dog park, sponsers event such as a Halloween fun run. Great fundraisers and to highlight all the interesting occupants.

This was very common at the necropolis in Rome that dates back to the 3rd century. You can still visit it preserved under St. Peter Basilica.

In Mexico they celebrate once a year what they call -The day off the Dead. Families gather to celebrate and eat around their ancestors tomb.
