This happens to me from time to time. I ask people to either slowly say the first word from the sentence or part it to syllables.

often I ask people to repeat themselves and they repeat the part of the sentence I /did/ understand and then I get impatient

I have apd so ill ask them to use different words and by the time they think of another way, my brain processed and understood the first thing

I just hate when they get mad and say "nevermind" and refuse to say what they had to say. That usually happens after the second time, it's the worst
