As a mom with ADHD, who has a partner with ADHD, and a son with ADHD, and grew up with a brother with severe ADHD, this topic is so so important to me. I remember when the school was telling me to get my son evaluated for ADHD in first grade. My first instinct was “there’s nothing wrong with my kid!”… I didn’t want him to have the same struggles that I grew up with… but mostly that I saw my brother grow up with because ADHD presents so differently in women and girls. But, then I thought about my brother… if he would have had a parent who provided him with the proper resources, got him the help that he needed when he was in first grade, his life would probably be a lot different than it is now. My son has always been the loudest in the room, the most hyper, the most emotionally unregulated. For a long time I thought I was doing something wrong. Why doesn’t my kid behave like these other children? Why can’t my child LISTEN. Why does he insist on embarrassing me every time we go out?? And people in my life didn’t help that. They were pushing these expectations on me and my son that we later found out were incredibly unrealistic. My son was diagnosed with severe hyperactive adhd. His doctor who’s specialized in ADHD for 30 years said he has one of the most severe cases he’s ever seen. My son is never going to be able to sit completely quiet at a dinner table without moving around, making noises, getting up from his seat to walk around, talking incessantly. He’s just not. Even on medication, which has been a LIFESAVER for him, he still cannot be expected to sit still and be quiet for an extended period of time. That is OKAY! Society is set up for neurotypical people and the minute someone doesn’t fit into that box, they’re wrong. I don’t care if my son needs to get up and walk around a bit in the middle of dinner. I don’t care if he goes in a diatribe about weird science facts, or needs to make little noises with his mouth to keep himself occupied. That’s normal life to me. So next time you see a mom out with a child who doesn’t sit still, shut up and eat, think… maybe that’s what is expected in their family. My son is 9 and for a long time I parented for other people. I parented based on the expectations other people set for me, and for my son. I parented for the judgmental moms, at least in public. I scolded him for things we later found out were symptoms of his disability and I feel a lot of guilt about that. If you’re the mom of a neurodivergent child, f what other people think. Do your research and do what you think is best for YOUR KID. Not what’s best for people who will never take the time to understand their mind. If you get dirty looks, who cares. What matters is the childhood you’re giving your child and I wish I knew that sooner! #adhdawareness #adhd #adhdawarenessmonth #adhdinkids #adhdtiktok
