Amchitka Island was the site of three underground nuclear tests by the United States between 1965 and 1971. The tests were named Long Shot (\(80\)-kiloton, 1965), Milrow (\(1\)-megaton, 1969), and Cannikin (\(5\)-megaton, 1971). The Cannikin test was the largest underground nuclear explosion in U.S. history. The tests were controversial due to environmental concerns, particularly the potential for earthquakes and the high number of sea otters killed, and they were a catalyst for the founding of the environmental group Greenpeace.                   Overview of the tests Long Shot (1965): An \(80\)-kiloton underground detonation that was part of a nuclear detection research experiment.  Milrow (1969): A \(1\)-megaton calibration test to ensure the island could safely contain a larger device for the upcoming Cannikin test.  Cannikin (1971): A \(5\)-megaton test, the largest underground nuclear test in U.S. history, which was designed to test the W71 warhead.              Environmental impact and controversy The tests caused environmental damage, including draining lakes and killing hundreds or potentially thousands of sea otters during the Cannikin blast.  Environmental groups like Greenpeace campaigned against the tests, with the 1971 protest of the Cannikin blast being a pivotal event in the organization's history.  Due to public opposition and environmental concerns, the U.S. canceled the Amchitka nuclear test program after the Cannikin test, despite drilling eight cavities for future tests.  Radioactive contamination remains on the island, and ongoing monitoring is in place to track potential leakage into the ocean, groundwater, and air.              Legacy Amchitka is no longer used for nuclear testing.  The island has since been declared a bird sanctuary.  Cleanup and monitoring efforts are still underway for residual waste left from the testing program. #alaska #ww2 #fyp #2025 #militarylife
