Field Notes – Entry #205 Location: Cobbled edge of the Lily Pond, south quadrant of Whitwell Botanical Reserve Species: Tulibranchia digestiva It began modestly—just a plump, unopened tulip-like bud, resting on four spindly legs at the edge of the path. The surface was warm to the touch, and the outer petals bore a faint pulsing, as though stirred by a breeze that wasn’t there. I turned to fetch my notebook, and when I looked back, it had cracked slightly open—just enough to expose the inner chamber - a deep coral bowl fringed with gold anthers. Then came the beetle. Drawn perhaps by scent, the beetle landed with a familiar hum, settling atop the smooth, rounded bud. Almost instantly, the petals trembled and folded upward, sealing the flower into a tight, closed bulb. But the beetle remained outside—still perched on the upper curve, unmoved and seemingly unaffected. Then, a second later, the petals unfurled again—this time not in a simple reversal, but with a subtle shift in form. The bloom opened deeper, wider, revealing a dark, recessed center. As the petals reached full span, the beetle lost its footing and slipped—falling neatly into the soft, sponge-like basin at the flower’s heart. No sound. Only the petals adjusted, as if nothing unusual had occurred at all. Tentatively classified as Tulibranchia digestiva. I suspect the act of feeding is seasonal, or perhaps responsive to proximity. Either way, I approached no closer. .
