I’ve been thinking a lot about the trajectory of my life. Nature vs nurture. What if I had been nurtured in the way that I needed? What if my sensitivity wasn’t a bad thing? What if my crying hadn’t been met with annoyance? What if my su*cide attempt at six years old hadn’t been mostly ignored and swept under the rug never to be talked about again? Or what if it had been treated and helped? I was really struggling in college at the time that I met my Mormon friend. I felt very “Meh” about life and was looking for a change. Transfer universities? Maybe! Experiment with dr*gs? Maybe. Which makes me lol because I was trying to plan to do them in the safest way possible; at someone’s house, a DD, etc. But my safety plans fell through so I was out. It didn’t feel like a big deal or a crossroads. Try new, more hard core dr*gs or go to Family Home Evening at my friend’s house. It was more, well this could be fun too and probably safer. I chose safety. And I have no regrets. I joined the LDS church and gave my life, heart, and soul for 14 years. And as time went on, it felt more and more that I didn’t want ”trajectory” anymore —object moving under the action of given forces—what if I was intentional with my life? What if I nurtured myself? Like deeply nourished my soul. And I wasn’t moving under the action of OTHER forces. What if I was the force? I left my religion. It doesn’t make sense to some, but religion was a PATH that I used to get Home. It was never meant to be my destination. I don’t define success as a checklist of things or accomplishments anymore. Am I safe? Am I present? Am I loved? Do I show up wholeheartedly? That is my version of success. No regrets getting to where I am, and my “what if’s” are wondered less and less as I move into acceptance. My childhood is what it is. I was raised by hurt people that didn’t know how to nourish and nurture themselves. They survived and that’s amazing. And I’d like to thrive, now. #traumahealingjourney #exmormon #exmo #traumahealing
