The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) - Iconic film of German expressionist cinema. A film that focuses heavily on the theme of doubles and the difficult distinction between hallucination and reality, the story of mutual accusations between the characters is delirious, all supported by a hallucinatory set design featuring zigzagging shapes, ominous shadows, serpentine streets that become dead ends. Characters act with heavily made-up faces, acting that exhumes a gestural, facial, mimicry exaggeration typical of the theatrical world, an exaggeration essential to make the whole work as unrealistic as possible. The protagonist Francis tells us in a lengthy flashback about Dr. Caligari, an asylum director who can manipulate a somnambulist by persuading him to commit vile murders, Francis will embark on an investigation and engage with the purpose of arresting the doctor. Finally inspiring later cinematography is the theme of madness. By the end of the film our beliefs completely collapse, entering the mind of Francis we end up no longer recognizing reality from fiction. Who was really crazy all along?
