Summary: A federal judge just blocked Trump’s executive order to dismantle the Department of Education and ordered reinstatement of laid-off staff. But the Secretary of Education is appealing. One person let go was Brianne Burger — our community’s liaison at the DOE and a fierce advocate for Deaf education. Let me explain why this matters. Parents of students with disabilities already struggle to navigate the education system. IDEA is a civil rights law that gives their children legal rights: IEPs, access to general education, and due process when those rights are violated. Even though the federal government only funds about 13–15% of IDEA (despite promising 40%), it still protects families and holds schools accountable. DOE’s Office for Civil Rights is one of the few tools families have to file complaints and push for change. And Brianne? She ensured Deaf schools and programs were seen and heard at the federal level. For nine years, she served as our bridge to lawmakers, budget conversations, and data-driven decisions. Now that role is gone. No liaison means no voice. And our schools are already feeling it — three Deaf schools are at risk of closing, including Indiana School for the Deaf. And it’s getting worse. Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” just passed the House. For the first time, it excludes funding for Gallaudet, NTID, and the American Printing House for the Blind — programs that have always had bipartisan support. Project 2025 makes their intentions crystal clear: dismantle IDEA and replace it with a block grant, giving states unchecked power to decide how much — or how little — they spend on special education. There would be no safeguards. No accountability. No guaranteed services. This bill was passed in the early hours, quietly. If there’s nothing to hide, why the secrecy? Call your senators. This is about our kids, our schools, and our future.
