Have you ever been shamed for nursing after 1? Extended breastfeeders can face a ton of social backlash and criticism for something society deems as too taboo. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months, alongside continued breastfeeding up to the second year and beyond. Breastmilk composition has been studied extensively in the first year but there is a serious lack of data regarding composition beyond 1 and 2 years postpartum. A group of researchers sought to analyze total fat, protein and carbohydrates in breastmilk from mothers nursing for under 12 months, 12-18 months, 18-24 months and over 24 months. ⁣ ⁣ They found that breastmilk produced after 1 year of lactation is extraordinarily rich in fat and has a higher energy content than breastmilk produced during the first 6 months of lactation.
