Man, I’ve put hundreds of end grain boards through a plainer . Never had a problem!

I think it's not as much end grain as it is burl or curly grain that goes all different directions.

Wagners Workshop :
Just be sure the blades are sharp and you do super light passes. I’ve had a few blow apart on me doing this before. One time it blew apart my planer.
