When a baby starts standing without support, it’s a major developmental milestone that shows their muscles, balance, and coordination are becoming strong enough to support their body independently. What it means? 1. Improved Muscle Strength: The baby’s legs, core, and back are strong enough to hold their weight. 2. Better Balance & Coordination: They can distribute their weight evenly without falling. 3. Readiness for Walking: Standing without support often happens just before taking their first independent steps (usually within a few weeks to months). 4. Confidence & Curiosity: Babies start experimenting with their new ability, exploring their surroundings more. When does it usually happen? Around 9–12 months: Babies can stand while holding onto furniture. Around 12–14 months: Many babies start standing without support for a few seconds. Around 12–15 months: Walking independently often follows. What you can do: 1. Encourage safe standing and walking practice by giving them stable surfaces to pull up on. 2. Avoid baby walkers (they can delay natural walking skills). 3. Let them be barefoot indoors—this improves balance and foot muscle strength.
