For almost 18 months, Sudan has been embroiled in a civil war. The fighting has killed tens of thousands of people and forced millions more from their homes. Mercenaries, people from foreign countries who have been hired to serve in the war, have been seen fighting alongside members of the Rapid Support Forces. The RSF is a rebel militia that was once aligned with Sudan's former dictator, Omar al-Bashir. The group is responsible for slaughtering civilians in Darfur in the mid-2010s and cracking down on protests in the country in 2019. After Bashir fell from power, RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo united with Army Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan to orchestrate a military coup, stripping Sudanese civilians from ruling their country. In 2023, civil war erupted between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces.
