Andrew Russell832 :
I have heard to seal it. It helps with bubbles. Personally I don't have enough experience to speak intelligently on the subject.

Meredith Woodworks :
sealing is also helpful in preventing staining of the face surface when pouring solid darker color epoxies

De-bark, seal cracks and crevices, then pour.

sealing helps prevent bubbles when using transparent colors. you do need to do the pour before the epoxy sets fully tho, to make sure it adheres

I have first hand experience on what happens when you don’t seal it. You are about to spend a lot of money on epoxy…….best seal it!

I always do a shallow pour, let it absorb and bubble out, heat gun, then repeat until to desired height. I do about a half inch at a time

I dont use epoxy per say, just because I don't want to batch that small. I use clear spray. No bonding issues. same with stacking coats.

We remove all bark, then do a brush seal and allow it to sit for two hours before actual pour. This process works for us but not gospel for sure.

I seal it and then pour before it cures completely (when it’s still a little tacky) so you get a good bond.

both seem to work the same, but sealing will prevent stains in the wood

I’ve done it all the ways, with success all the ways. Never any issues. My deep pours are without sealing. @Crafted of Light and Lumber

Seal it and pour the rest while it’s still tacky. Or if you let it dry fully you can just aggravated the epoxy with sand paper and then pour on top.

Seal it. Done it both ways and not sealed results in bubbles.

Pull all bark. Seal coating the wood is fine.

seal it then pour the river when it's tacky. if you let it fully cure first, scuff it with 220 sandpaper. either way, seal it or you'll get bubbles.
