I worked at a vet for a long time and had to do this all the time. however my cat will just eat a pill right out of my hand. she's the best.

Try to get transdermal, it's so much easier. Just rub the cream on the inner ear flap

I wrap my cat in a blanket and flip him on his back, throw the pill in and do a syringe of water so he swallows! Works like a charm.
