My son was in his 7th grade gym class when he overheard a group of boys making racist jokes. When he came home to tell me about his experience he was really upset. He just kept asking “what if Ryker or Mya had heard that?” His understanding of why these things are unacceptable, painful and wrong may be deeper because of our family dynamic but the truth is that they shouldn’t be that different. All kids by 12 years old should understand racism and why making jokes of that nature is wrong but if we’re being honest most don’t. One of the most common reasons white parents give for not talking about racism with their children is that their kids are inherently good, love everyone and would be friends with anyone regardless of what they look like. However, you may be surprised what your children would say or do when they’re trying to fit in and don’t understand the context or depth of what they’re saying. Education is important even when it doesn’t impact you directly. Not feeling the need to have a conversation because you will never end up on the negative end of it is a privilege. So talk to your kids. Teach them about racism in an age appropriate way for them to understand. Help them understand the gravity of racist jokes, comments and even thoughts. Help them stand up for what’s right when they see something that’s wrong.
