I believe there are four main stages of parenting and the fourth stage is 13 years and older. This is what I consider to be the teen stage. From my experience this is when you want to start letting go and letting them make more mistakes. Here are my top five tips for parenting teenagers: 1️⃣ Listen to understand and show empathy. Do not listen to gather information to lecture with or they will shut you out. They will ask for your advice if they want it. 2️⃣ Negotiate as much as possible with teenagers. It could look like this … I want you to put your dirty clothes in the hamper from now on … what would you like to see from me? 3️⃣ Do not sweat the small stuff with teenagers. If they do something stupid and it is not a big deal then I would let it go. Allow them to make mistakes just like you did and just like you do. If you are always micromanaging and criticizing them I don’t believe it will make them feel great. 4️⃣ Do not leverage the good times to discuss the bad times. From my experience there is no point in rehashing past negative experiences. 5️⃣ You can be a right fighter or you can be happy. If you are arguing with your teenager you are not a calm leader. Even if you are right … do not fight with them. No one wins in an argument with a teenager. Remember … it’s about giving respect to get it. P.S. Did you know I have a parenting podcast?
