Squash bugs and snails. Last year all my squash and cucumber plants got decimated by the bugs before the vine borers had a chance

oooh do carrots! i never had carrots problems till this year. had some critters smaller then maggots burrow down center from near top on a bunch.

I never saw the adults…but I had those dang larvae on every plant! I dug out the larvae and killed 1/2 my plants in the process. 🥺 So frustrating

Also if you see little red specks on the stem those are eggs. Get rid of them.

They will lay their eggs anywhere on the plant and work their way into the main stem, but definitely the base is the most deadly.

If your squash / zucchini does get eaten up you can cut leave and bury the stalk in dirt and keep well watered and it will root again keeping alive
