there shouldn't be a nut and both there, the person before me did that on one of my Ford trucks and it broke the bendix and flywheel when it loosened.

Maybe the plate was bent just enough for the starter to connect to the fly wheel, for it to start ? And have you put new plugs and wires in it?

So I ran into the Same problem with my 02 mustang GT you have to adjust the starter and it has to be at a certain angle for it to engage the flywheel
