Not too difficult. It’s just to prevent elision of the word final ‘a’ next to the word initial ‘a’. Just like why we say ‘aN apple’

Hi, Spanish major here. It's because agua has a Greek root, and is masculine in Greek. Other examples are el planeta, el programa, and el día.
