Serial Experiments Lain is, to me, the most visually impactful, profoundly original, and beautifully confusing anime title ever created. Even from just the initial few episodes, I was entirely absorbed by its artistic qualities, the simple yet smooth animation, the persistent dreamlike visuals, and the constantly unsettling music. It quickly became clear to me that this show exists outside the boundaries of conventional or casual viewing. The artwork is what initially captured me and remains a central reason for its appeal. Character designs are minimal, but the skill demonstrated in making their movements fluid and integrating them seamlessly into the backgrounds is striking. Computer graphics are used sparingly but effectively to enhance this movement without ever becoming a dominant feature. The backgrounds themselves are often breathtaking, shifting from meticulously detailed environments to stark and surreal landscapes. This, along with the occasional, odd rainbow colored dialogue screens, establishes a pervasive, unsettling, dreamlike tone that I adore. But SEL is not all about the style, the series provides a deep perspective on the human condition. Fundamentally, it serves as an exploration of communication, the idea that we are simultaneously connected to one another and intensely isolated, mediated by technology like phone lines and computer networks, which was way ahead of its time. The characters, from the quiet Lain to her family and friends, aren't given extensive backstories. This deliberate choice allows them to function as easily recognizable archetypes, which actually makes the story’s more abstract, philosophical themes feel immediately relevant and grounded. The plot structure is where the show truly excels and cements its place as my favorite. Engaging with those early episodes felt like a genuine cognitive workout, a mental reorganization. It avoids being an action or comedy driven series. Instead, it is intensely cerebral, consistently forcing the viewer to actively think about the narrative’s meaning and progression. Just as you feel you’ve grasped one piece of the puzzle, the story introduces another layer of complexity, demanding a higher level of intellectual investment. This unique experience is unified by the sound design. From the beautifully melancholic opening theme to the sharp music of the club scenes, and particularly the intentional absence of sound in certain key moments, the show's aural component is as sophisticated and powerful as its visual one. Ultimately, SEL is my favorite because it functions on a challenging, intellectual, and surreal level.
