let’s break down “to”, “in order to”, and “so that” when we use them to express purpose or reason in English. 1️⃣ “To” the simplest form Form: to + base verb Use: Shows purpose in a very direct way. Common in everyday speech and writing. Usually used when the subject of the main clause and the subject of the action after to are the same. Examples: I study to pass my exams. She went to the store to buy milk. Notes: Very short and efficient, but sometimes feels too informal or vague for formal writing. Cannot always be used if the purpose is negative (“I avoided him so that…”) in those cases, “so that” is better. 2️⃣ “In order to” more formal or emphatic Form: in order to + base verb Use: Also expresses purpose, but sounds more formal or emphasized than just “to”. Often used in academic, official, or clear instructional writing. Good when you want to make the purpose very explicit. Examples: I left early in order to catch the train. The meeting was moved in order to accommodate everyone’s schedules. Notes: “In order not to” is more natural than “to not” in formal writing: She spoke quietly in order not to wake the baby. 3️⃣ “So that” connects with a clause Form: so that + subject + verb Use: Expresses purpose, but often with a sense of intended outcome or goal. Can be used when the subject of the purpose is different from the subject of the main clause. Often followed by can, could, will, or would to show the intended result. Examples: I spoke slowly so that everyone could understand. She left the lights on so that her cat wouldn’t be scared. Notes: More flexible in expressing purpose involving different subjects: (Same subject) I whispered so that you wouldn’t wake up. (Different subject) I called early so that they could prepare. #englishlearning #learningenglishonline #englishlearners #englishtips
