No, the body senses an increase in hydrogen ions. Easier to detect than CO2 from a chemical standpoint, which is why we evolved that way.

(Not recommending this), but if you hyperventilate a bit (breathing shallow & rapidly) you drive down the CO2 level and can stay underwater longer
