my parents have a 2013 forester turbo 2.5 and at 101k the engine blew because the idler pulley bearing in the timing set disintegrated

Unfortunately the later single cam engines like you have their were interference motors, the good ole ej22 was the best engine they made for sure

Looks like it dropped a valve, destroyed the head then hydro-locked its neighbor by pushing coolant through valves

This can happen randomly but a timing belt wasn’t serviced properly causing this to happen. Subarus can be problematic if not well maintained.

Only thing that kills these single cam engine is timing belt or lack of oil. Naturally Subaru will burn oil because gravity.
