@kellybowmancreative: St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is the oldest and most famous cemetery in New Orleans… It was opened in 1789, replacing the city’s older St. Peter Cemetery as the main burial ground when the city was redesigned after a fire in 1788. The cemetery is known for a few things… it’s above ground burials- the city’s high water table makes in-ground burials impossible, a coffin buried underground floats back to the top. It’s the final resting place for Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau- her tomb is considered to be the most famous tomb in the city, and it’s also home to the future tomb of actor Nicolas Cage- his tomb is hard to miss, it’s a giant pyramid in honor of a movie he was in called National Treasure. The cemetery attracts more than 100,000 visitors a year. If you want to visit, the only way to access the cemetery is via an official, guided tour. #new#neworleansw#neworleanscemeterym#cemetaryphotographyl#nolow#neworleansphotographys#visitneworleanse#thebigeasya#travelwithmep#explorewithmer#girlswhotravela#travelphotographyn#wanderingphotographerse#shetravelse#sheexploresm#femaletravelerl#falltravelo#spookyseasons#historicplacesauntedplaces
