You know the easiest way to do this, teach them place and then stay. Have them go to place and stay while preparing food

we have ours kennel up and sit, so when we start making her dinner she just goes and sits in her kennel to wait for dinner

we only feed her in the kennel so when she hears the food and gets excited she just excitedly runs into the kennel

My dog used to be the same way now he sits and waits he still gets a bit jumpy but much better than what it used to be

interesting. I have 4 dogs whom none of which countersunk, but I've always made them wait in their crates while I prepare all the food.
