My dad worked in concrete his whole life and he said there’s two things guaranteed with it. It’s gonna get hard and it’s gonna crack.

Exterior flatwork should float independently from the building with expansion joint in between

It’s better not to put rebar in that case

it's not from moving up/down with frost. it tried to shrink away from the building. the rebar was too strong. that's why they have greased dowels

That’s why you don’t pin to the footing. Should have expansion joint between, and better compaction on backfill

Put Expansion along the wall / Let it Float.. Also put Proper “Base” down & compacted

The footing is a separate pour from the flat work probably poor compaction for the flatwork caused the cracks

KMoney :
You never pin an exterior slab into something like this.. the exterior slab is going to raise and be forced to break somewhere when frost gets under that sidewalk. Doesn’t matter if there’s rebar or proper “compaction”

Pinning the foundation to the sidewalk is a no no. Should have had foam expansion along the house.

it is a back fill crack! the crack follows the back fill . if it was dolled in the cracks would run the straight out from the building !
