@clairedouglasstyling: 1. Mix your plaster or dilute your ready mixed product to a yogurt-like consistency and load up your choice of skimming tool. . 2. Start in a corner and apply an even coat of plaster to your prepped wall. At this point it doesn’t have to be completely smooth but it helps if it’s of even thickness - 3-4mm is about right. 3. Work in sections, not too large to start with or the plaster will begin to set before you’re ready. As you practice you’ll get quicker and can work larger areas. 4. Once you’ve covered the area, go back to the start and smooth it out using smooth, even passes from one side to the other. Apply uneven pressure on your trowel/taping knife/ spreader so that you only get one line in the plaster. You want the line in the direction you are moving across the wall so that you smooth it out in the next pass. (If moving from left to right across the wall then apply more pressure to the LHS of the tool so the seam is to the RHS if that makes sense!) Keep the tool really flat to the wall the whole time as this will help flatten the plaster rather then scrape it off as you go. The final thickness of your first coat should be 1-2mm. . Don’t worry if it’s not perfect - im going to share some tips tomorrow on how to smooth out imperfections once your plaster has started to dry.
