American Muslim scholar Hamza Yusuf explains the hijab requirements of freewomen and slave women in Islamic law. In early Islam, it was reported that unveiled slave women walked the streets of Medina, sometimes with their breasts. Some early jurists such as Malik ibn Anas in the eight century, asked the Governor of Medina to order the slaves to cover their breasts, but to no avail. In Islamic law, freewomen are required to wear a hijab and cover their entire body except for their face and hands. However, the hijab requirements for slave women are not the same as free women. Slave women are not required to cover their hair and breasfs, according to premodern jurists. This was based on an understanding that the awrah (nakedness) of slave women is between the knee and navel, the same as the awrah of men.
