I use a soft luggage backpack too and it has always fit into personal item slot and I have never been force to pay.

Same thing happed to me. I’m a pilot and been flying for 15 years. I did hwork and found out these gate agents are subcontract labor and get kickback.

A worker once told us, i dont care if you stand on it to male it fit, as long as it fits! So dont be scared to squish your bag till it fits!

i’m currently stranded in orlando cause my backpack “didn’t fit” and i asked for 2 mins so i could pay the 99 and they closed the gate on me.
