A woman surprised her husband, staying in Guanajuato, Mexico, with a long-awaited update on his US immigration status on July 16. Footage posted to TikTok by @lesliereds, also known as Leslie Rojas, shows the moment the woman approaches her husband, Luis, and tells him to check his phone. “No way!” the man says with a smile before breaking in tears. Luis’ I-601 waiver of grounds of inadmissibility was approved on July 16, granting the father and husband the right to move back to the United States. “This i601 does not mean he is a US Citizen,” Rojas told Storyful. “He still has 3-4 years before he can apply for citizenship. We were very happy with the news because it is a step forward.” According to Rojas, Luis was brought to the US when he was a toddler, and started his immigration process in 2017 from within the US. “He was temporarily rejected and couldn’t reenter the USA after living here for about 25 years,” Rojas said. “We had to submit the I-601 waiver, which took 35 months and 26 days to be approved.” Since his US visa was rejected in May 2022 due to a failed medical exam, Luis has been living in Mexico, while his wife and daughter stayed back in Dallas, Texas. In October 2023, Luis’ ineligibility was cleared off his record, after he successfully passed a second medical exam. “The process has been long, tedious, overwhelming, not to mention very emotional,” Rojas said. “The waiver approval brought us so much happiness as soon we will be whole again.”
