Idk if it's necessarily offensive? I'd say it's just not appropriate outside of the occasion it's meant for. The small ones are common for everyday.

Just to note it's not specific to the Hindu religion it's mostly all of South Asia actually, generally if you aren't sa, it's probably too risky
