Most of the Scoobies are surprised that Buffy would turn to Spike. Xander is disgusted that Buffy turned to Spike. It really shouldn’t be so shocking. The way most of them acted during season 6, she had no one else to turn to. First of all, Spike played no role in pulling Buffy out of heaven. That alone made him more appealing to Buffy than the rest of the group during that time. Spike understood what it was like to wake up trapped in a coffin. That connected them. He also was the only one who truly realized that Buffy was depressed and suffering as soon as she came back. Everyone else acted like she was just in temporary shock. That’s why she confides in him that she was peacefully in heaven, not trapped in hell. Buffy never wants to burden her friends. She hides the fact that she’s in pain that they directly caused. They are all too busy to notice she’s hiding something until Sweet forces it out of her. Even after they find out about her being in heaven they never truly comfort her or apologize to her. Willow is falling deeper and deeper into her magic addiction and it’s taking over her life. Xander is super focused on himself and his potential wedding to Anya. I do think sometimes Xander over inserts himself into Buffy’s life in other seasons. But during this time of crisis he’s not paying attention at all. Then we have Giles who Buffy loves like a father leave her shortly after finding out what she had gone through. Tara thankfully is kind and understanding when she finds out about Buffy & Spike. But due to her break up with Willow she’s spending less time with the group. Buffy has also been depressed for weeks before sharing this information with Tara. Willow, Anya, Xander and Tara ripped Buffy out of heaven using magic and didn’t think to bring a shovel. Giles was not there for this and does not approve of what was done, but provides little help after. This leaves Dawn and Spike. Buffy would never want to burden Dawn with her feelings. So this leaves Spike as the one person Buffy has to turn to during this time. That’s why it’s hard to see some of the other characters have so much judgement and commentary over her connection to Spike in seasons 6 & 7.
