@fascinatedbyfungi: All this rain in California has got me excited for this coming Morel season! These are true morel mushrooms (Morchella species) growing in the mountains of California after a wild fire. On the west coast of North America morels predominately occur in association with conifers above 3000ft after wildfire. They can grow at lower elevations with other tree types, but ghe highest concentrations of them will be at higher elevations. These are black burn morels, distinct from the blonde morels across much kf the midwest in spring. Morels are associated with spring time as they fruit after a cold spell when the soil temps reach 50-60F.
