Yesterday we had to say goodbye to the matriarch of our herd. Ruth came to our farm as one of the first heifers we ever bought. Getting into it we didn’t know much but we took a chance on her and another heifer. Bought them cheap and bred younger than recommended. But I’m here to say that they can still grow into great cows regardless. She calved her first calf with no problems, he was 90lbs and a cream colored bull. She had him with no help, and did fabulous. Adam and I both looked at the calf and looked at her and thought she was going to be an amazing cow to our Herd. At the time we had 2 hiefers and a bull. But we knew she was going to be the cow we could turn out and never have to watch close and make sure she was okay during calving season. She continued on and brought 7 calves onto the farm. 1 bull and 6 heifers. One thing you never wanted to mess with was Ruth when she had a calf under 2 weeks old. Adam came to realize that one spring when he was walking in the field and checked on her and noticed she was a lot thinner than she was the night before. We went to look for her calf and found it. She soon found Adam with her calf and came running and mooing at him. He stood up and ran right towards her screaming and she stopped in her tracks. But from then on we kept a distance when she had a fresh calf. Ruth made me easily fall in love with cows. She was the one that started it all for me. Checking on her daily the first few months and feeding her every day getting her to grow while she grew her calf. I’m sure we had plenty of conversations each day. I would tell her each time to not have her calf unless I was there so I could help incase something happened and of course I had never seen a cow have a calf and wanted to see it. The plan for her was to stay on the farm until it was her time. I had planned for her to be the granny of the herd once she had quit giving us a calf each year. Spending her days under the tree line, baby sitting for all the other cows. She spent her last night in my back yard, under close watch. Trying to hand feed her anything she would take and all the fresh water she wanted. She never did make it back to the field with the other cows like we hoped. I’m sure there is a cow size hoof print embedded in my heart from Ruth. She will forever be missed.
