When you die, your soul is taken into a room. There, waiting for you, is the Goddess of Rebirth. ‘So, this is what's going to happen,’ she says. ‘You have to choose your next life. You have to choose your next soul. And this soul will guide your every action and every thought. But it will do so gently. It will nudge and hint, but it will guide your life. Choose now your guiding spirit.’ This is an idea taken from Plato's Republic, and it's a great way to introduce Schopenhauer’s idea of fate or the will. There are moments in our lives — more so as we get older — when we reflect back on our life's journey. You think back to your school days and remember that time you met that person. You smile to yourself as that distant acquaintance in your life ended up becoming the love of your life. You think how odd and how lucky it was to choose that day to make that decision, the decision that changed your life. When we look back on our life, it seems as if it's some finely tuned and finely scripted drama. It was so obvious it was always going to be that way. It feels as if there was some force, or some spirit, or some Platonic soul nudging and prodding us along the path. That nudging spirit is what Schopenhauer calls the will. The will is the driving force of all life. It's like the great current of a river that pushes us along. For Schopenhauer, there is no chance. There is no unexplained fact. Everything is connected, and everyone is joined. Your life walks the path of your will.
